On-Site vs Off-Site Optimization

October 17, 2009

SEO techniques can be broken down into two general categories – onsite and offsite. Both of these will benefit your rankings, so it’s worth your time to address them both when building and promoting your website.

On-site SEO includes the specific actions you take on your webpages to increase your search engine position.

Off-site SEO techniques are the actions you take outside of your webpages to increase your search engine position. Backlinks are one of the most important strategies in the offsite SEO toolbox. For example, say you’ve put together a site on reducing hypertension and heart attacks. If Google or another major search engine notices that the American Heart Association has linked back to your site, it assumes your site must include good content. The more of these quality links back to your site you get, the more free traffic you’ll receive from the search engines because your site will rank higher.

Both on-site and off-site optimization help the search engines categorize your site and rank it higher. On-site optimization is more under your control than off-site optimization. So you need to make sure each page of your site is well optimized and then start a link building campaign.

A SEO Friendly Directory Is Basic Search Engine Optimization

July 17, 2009

In terms of website marketing strategies and the use of a SEO friendly directory, these do have their uses. Many are free, but how many of them are useful? If you conduct a search will find a load of directories listed, all of which claim to be able to do the same thing. But as all men are not created equal, neither are online website directories. The most important factor in this case is whether or not the directly is actively and correctly managed.

Managed? But isn’t everything automatic online? Absolutely not, all links are required to undergo and editing process. The directory cannot do the editing it has to be done by the people who manage the directory. Directories which are not actively managed are often referred to as “link farms” because in actuality this is pretty much what they are. No website owner needs to have his links managed by a link farm.

You will find online lists of SEO friendly directories which are free, as well as paid. Many of these are not actively managed all that regularly, but they do meet the basic criteria required for the categorization and organization of websites in the correct way.

It is virtually impossible to submit links to your website at every SEO friendly directory you find. This would be cumbersome and a very time consuming task. The best way to go about this is to make use of a service which makes these submissions on your behalf. There are both free and other services where a cost is involved available. But they do save you time and as we all know, time is money.

These directories can help your website marketing strategies, and make quite a difference. This is because the internet is already a very large place, so this narrows down searches and helps the site receive targeted traffic. For example if you are selling vintage velvet clothing, your website will be listed under an already narrowed down search. Much like the yellow pages we used to get and still do. Current search engines conduct a very broad based search.

It is a moot point that not many people actually make use of these kinds of directories. They are not used to making use of them, but times change quickly online and what was a nothing one day, could be a huge success the next.

What really needs to be borne in mind is the fact that a directory submission is able to help your website marketing strategy quite substantially. It enables search engines to rank it higher and the higher the ranking, the better for getting targeted, or pre-qualified traffic to your site.
